TIPPERS: Privacy-Preserving IoT for Smart Spaces
TIPPERS (Testbed for IoT-based Privacy-Preserving PERvasive Spaces) was developed at UC Irvine under the DARPA Brandeis program, which set out to build technology that protects privacy without sacrificing the usefulness of data.
My role
- Co-developed the platform as a graduate researcher (2016–2022), advised by Prof. Nalini Venkatasubramanian.
- Designed the wireless (Wi-Fi and BLE) packet-analysis and anomaly-detection pipelines, proven at a scale of more than 2,000 access points.
- Built cryptographic attestation mechanisms for hard-to-observe device behavior in smart spaces, which became IoT Notary.
Deployment and testing
TIPPERS ran on the UC Irvine campus, where its sensing and privacy services were exercised across university buildings. The platform was also tested in the U.S. Navy’s Trident Warrior 2019 and 2020 exercises, which evaluate emerging technologies in operational settings.
